Trump’s Planned Asia Visit Amid Government Shutdown

President Trump is heading to Asia soon to present a significant foreign policy initiative at the ASEAN and APEC summits, all while federal workers remain in uncertainty due to the ongoing government shutdown.

During his trip to Malaysia, Japan, and South Korea, Trump is set to meet with high-ranking officials, including a discussion with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Meanwhile, South Korea is still waiting on a concrete trade agreement with the U.S., particularly concerning increased tariffs on imports and exports. This could slowly affect American consumers as they deal with rising prices for everyday items like groceries and gasoline, especially with the holidays approaching.

In another development, Sanae Takaichi has just been elected as Japan’s first female prime minister. She’s expected to oversee a $550 billion investment in U.S. projects over the next four years, covering sectors like pharmaceuticals, energy, shipbuilding, and computer chips.

Trump has suggested that he might approve Takaichi quickly; she’s a conservative with close ties to former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Earlier this month, he praised her as “a highly respected person of great wisdom and strength.”

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who is traveling with Trump, is leading the discussions on trade and is likely to provide insights during his appearances on various political talk shows.

On another front, U.S.-Venezuela tensions are escalating following recent counter-narcotics operations against military vessels in the Caribbean. The Trump administration has stated these actions were in response to drug trafficking, while Venezuelan officials are disputing the allegations.

“I don’t necessarily think we need to call for a declaration of war,” Trump remarked about the situation. “I think we’re just going to target those bringing drugs into our country. OK? We’re going to go after them.”

Some lawmakers have expressed that these overseas actions should be reconsidered, noting they were not consulted. For instance, Senator James Lankford emphasized that communication is crucial, labeling Trump’s actions as necessary yet stressing the importance of collaboration.

Senator Rand Paul has also voiced opposition to the attacks on Venezuelan ships and is expected to address it on a Fox News program soon.

In Congress, Rep. Steve Womack may speak on the military actions during his upcoming appearance on NewsNation’s “The Hill Sunday.”

Meanwhile, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is anticipated to criticize Republicans on CBS News’ “Face the Nation” as the government shutdown influences various sectors.

This shutdown is impacting aviation safety, leading to delays as air traffic controllers work without pay. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is likely to discuss these issues on Fox News as well.

These topics will be central to discussions in this week’s Sunday morning news shows. Below is a list of scheduled guest appearances.
