New York Jets Legend Nick Mangold Passes Away at 41

Nick Mangold, the renowned center for the New York Jets, has died from kidney disease, as announced by the team on Sunday. He was only 41 years old.

Throughout his 11-year career with the Jets, he participated in seven Pro Bowls, representing Gang Green enthusiastically.

In a poignant letter to the Jets community, Mangold shared his health struggles: “In 2006, I was diagnosed with a genetic defect that leads to chronic kidney disease. I’m on dialysis in hopes of getting a kidney transplant. I knew this day would come someday, but I thought I’d have more time.”

A two-time first-team All-Pro, Mangold played in nearly every game during his first decade in New York, missing only four matches.

“Nick was more than just a legendary center,” stated Jets owner Woody Johnson. “He was a cornerstone of our offensive line for a decade and a cherished teammate whose leadership and resilience shaped an era of Jets football. Off the field, his wit, warmth, and unwavering loyalty made him a treasured member of our extended Jets family.”

Mangold was one of two first-round selections the Jets made in 2006 to enhance their offensive line, with the other choice being left tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson. The former Ohio State star was central to the Jets’ offense under head coach Rex Ryan, achieving significant success during his tenure.

Ryan, who is now an ESPN analyst, was visibly emotional upon learning of Mangold’s passing on Sunday morning.

“Nick embodied consistency, strength, and leadership,” remarked Jets Vice President Christopher Johnson. “For over a decade, he anchored our offensive line with unmatched skill and resolve, earning the admiration of teammates, opponents, and fans. His on-field contributions were remarkable, but it was his character, humility, and humor that made him truly unforgettable.”

Mangold was honored with a place in the Jets’ Ring of Honor on June 2, 2022, alongside linemate D’Brickashaw Ferguson and star cornerback Darrelle Revis.

In a statement, Jets owner Woody Johnson conveyed the organization’s condolences: “On behalf of the entire Johnson family and the New York Jets organization, we extend our deepest sympathies to Jenny and their four children — Matthew, Eloise, Thomas, and Charlotte — as well as to Nick’s extended family, friends, and all who loved him. Nick Mangold will forever be a Jet.”
