Chinese individuals detained in Georgia for a $400K uranium trafficking scheme

Georgia Authorities Foil Major Uranium Smuggling Plot

In Georgia, officials have managed to stop a significant attempt at nuclear smuggling. This involved several Chinese nationals who were allegedly trying to secure uranium on the black market, according to recent reports.

On Saturday, the State Security Service of Georgia (SSSG) revealed that three Chinese individuals were arrested in Tbilisi. They were reportedly trying to purchase around 4.4 pounds of uranium for $400,000.

It appears that the plan involved transporting the uranium to China via Russia. It’s pretty alarming to think about, right?

According to authorities, the suspects had intended to acquire 2 kilograms of uranium. Video footage has shown security agents in Tbilisi seizing a bottle labeled as uranium and arresting those involved.

Interestingly, one of the suspects had overstayed his visa and was in Georgia illegally. He was supposedly instrumental in trying to find and procure radioactive materials, even bringing in overseas expertise to assist, as per reports. Others in the group were said to have coordinated efforts from China.

Security forces caught them while they were, well, negotiating the details of this illegal deal. However, specifics about the timing of the arrests or the identities of those involved weren’t disclosed.

This incident follows a prior case in July, where authorities arrested both a foreigner and a Georgian national linked to a uranium trafficking scheme valued at $3 million. Officials noted that such materials could potentially be used to create explosive devices or even for terrorist attacks.
