J.T. Miller criticizes Rangers' disappointing slow starts: 'It’s frustrating'

Rangers Struggle in Slow Start Against Flames

CALGARY, AB — The Rangers found themselves in a familiar spot, starting off slowly and unable to bounce back from their previous game at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

After falling behind by two points within the first 9:21, the Blueshirts managed only one goal of their own. The Flames, however, were more effective, scoring three additional goals against goaltender Igor Shesterkin, leading to a 5-1 defeat.

In the first 20 minutes, the Flames not only outscored the Rangers but also outshot them significantly, 12-5. Moreover, this was the second time this season that the visiting team gave up the first goal within just two minutes of play.

“We can’t just accept a flat record,” Rangers captain JT Miller remarked after the team dropped to 3-5-2 this season. “We need to change our approach. We’re in the right mindset and ready. Losing the first period again set the tone. I thought we played well in the second and third periods, but a few costly mistakes affected us. Still, the offensive bounce we needed just wasn’t there.”

Miller continued, “There’s no excuse for finishing flat. It’s frustrating. We really need to improve our starts. This trip is tough, so we must be ready from the get-go.”

Head coach Mike Sullivan echoed Miller’s sentiments, pointing out an opportunity to kill a play at the half wall was lost when the team “went for the puck” instead of maintaining their positioning.

“Defensive fundamentals are about controlling bodies and playing between the puck and the man,” he explained. “We were too focused on fishing for the puck instead. The NHL has a lot of talent; we need to sharpen our attention to detail, especially where the puck drops.”

Noah Laba managed to score his first career goal, narrowing the Flames’ lead in the first period by driving to the net and converting off Calgary’s goaltender Dustin Wolfe.

“He brings a lot of energy and speed,” Sullivan said. “He creates pressure on defenders which can lead to penalties. His skating today was impressive, and he utilized his speed effectively. That’s definitely a strength he brings to our team.”

Shesterkin faced 30 shots, stopping 25, marking his sixth loss of the season.

Brennan Osman also made his season debut, participating in his 26th career NHL game. During his first match against the Rangers this season, he logged 12 minutes and 31 seconds on the ice, finishing with a minus-1 and a single shot on goal.

On a brighter note, the Wolfpack, after a rough start at 1-4, secured a 6-3 victory over the Springfield Thunderbirds, with Gabe Perreault, Dylan Lubrook, Bryce McConnell Barker, and Blake Hillman each contributing a goal and an assist.
