City agencies: assisting businesses and fostering opportunities

New York’s Dynamic Spirit

New York thrives on hustle and opportunity. At every bus stop, you’ll witness eager, ambitious individuals heading off to interviews, parents juggling school drop-offs, and entrepreneurs unlocking their shops for the day. Central to this vibrant energy is a city agency dedicated to supporting working-class New Yorkers.

The city hosts around 183,000 small and medium enterprises. To ensure their ongoing success, the Small Business Services Administration is rolling out enhanced support through Forward 2.0, a program designed to slash red tape, boost entrepreneurship, and improve access to funding. Additionally, the Small Business Opportunity Fund has distributed over $85 million to help more than 1,000 small businesses since its inception in 2023. With such initiatives, it’s projected that one in five current small businesses will have started within the last three years.

Moreover, the Mayor’s Office of Minority and Women-Owned Businesses (M/WBE) is achieving record numbers with $23.5 billion awarded to minority and women-led companies within this short span. Supporting M/WBE not only fosters an inclusive economy but also bolsters communities across New York City.

A safe environment is crucial for businesses to flourish. New York is recognized as the safest large city in the U.S., thanks to the continuous efforts of first responders and city officials focused on enhancing safety and quality of life. A program called Community Link aims to unite community and business leaders to tackle complex local issues, ensuring a coordinated response to improve city safety and livability.

Investing in businesses also translates to supporting families, especially concerning education, childcare, and after-school programs. New York is investing $755 million in its “After-School for All” initiative, offering K-12 students enriching activities like sports, robotics, and art, while alleviating the burden on parents who often juggle work and family responsibilities.

All these efforts are showing tangible results. New York City has achieved an all-time high in employment, marking the twelfth time since 2022 that we have reached 4.9 million jobs. This accomplishment underscores New York’s commitment to being a prime location for career growth, family life, and business development. It’s built on the hard work and collaboration of those in city government striving daily for a safer and more affordable community.
