USS Gravely arrives in Trinidad and Tobago for drills amid tensions with Venezuela

US Guided Missile Destroyer Arrives in Trinidad

A US guided missile destroyer docked in Trinidad and Tobago’s capital this past Sunday as the Trump administration increases military efforts against Venezuela and its President, Nicolas Maduro.

The USS Gravely reached Port of Spain to engage in joint military exercises with Caribbean countries. Officials stated that the warship will be present until Thursday.

Jennifer Neihart de Ortiz, the Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy, mentioned that the purpose of the exercises is to tackle shared threats, such as transnational crime, and to enhance resilience through training, humanitarian missions, and security initiatives.

In response, Venezuela labeled these military activities within its waters as “dangerous” and a “serious threat” to the region, claiming it represents a “hostile provocation” against the nation, according to a statement from their Foreign Ministry.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, expressed support for the US military presence and the administration’s aggressive actions against suspected drug traffickers operating near Venezuela.

The arrival of the USS Gravely coincides with the approach of the aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford towards Venezuela, part of an ongoing strategy by the Trump administration to target alleged drug-smuggling operations in the Caribbean.

President Maduro criticized these military movements, alleging that the US government is attempting to create a “new forever war” against Venezuela.

The Trump administration has already initiated multiple operations aimed at dismantling drug cartels in the region. President Trump went as far as to declare Maduro as the leader of a drug cartel.

Earlier this month, Trump also acknowledged that he had authorized covert CIA operations in Venezuela, a decision influenced by the country releasing prisoners to the US and the flow of drugs from Venezuela into the United States via sea.
