Argentina’s Midterm Elections Bring Success for President Javier Milei
Since assuming the presidency in December 2023, Javier Milei, who identifies as an “anarcho-capitalist,” has taken decisive action—what he calls a “chainsaw” approach—to cut through the ineffective policies of his left-wing predecessor. His measures have begun to lift Argentina out of an economic crisis.
Though progress is evident, the future of Milei’s liberal reforms and ongoing U.S. assistance hinges on the performance of his Freedom Forward Party in the recent midterm elections.
In a positive turn for Milei and his anti-left coalition, the Freedom Forward Party achieved notable victories against its leftist opponents across almost all regions of the country, securing around 41% of the national vote—surpassing expectations.
Milei’s party captured 64 seats in the lower house and 12 in the upper house of the Argentine National Congress. This positions the ruling party well, as it now holds sufficient power to support Milei’s presidential vetoes.
In response to the electoral success, Donald Trump congratulated Milei, stating, “Our confidence in him was justified by the Argentine people.” He expressed optimism following what he termed a landslide victory.
According to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Milei is tackling a hundred years of misguided economic policies. Bessent remarked at a cabinet meeting that, with upcoming elections, he expects Milei to continue pushing his reform agenda.
Bessent criticized the previous Obama administration for missing chances to support Latin American nations shifting towards the center-right. He noted that the Trump administration aims to forge economic ties with countries that align with its values.
Bessent mentioned that Argentina’s stability is crucial for U.S. interests, highlighting recent assistance, which included a $20 billion currency swap aimed at stabilizing the economy, thus bypassing the International Monetary Fund.
Trump underscored the significance of this election, warning that should Milei’s party lose, the U.S. might not maintain its current level of support for Argentina. He indicated that the U.S. attitude towards investment could shift dramatically depending on the election outcome.
In his victory speech, Milei indicated that if his party secures enough parliamentary seats in December, Argentina would have its most reform-oriented parliament ever, aiming to become “the freest country in the world.” He expressed that the nation has shown a collective desire for irreversible change.
Florida Congresswoman Maria Elvira Salazar praised Milei as a symbol of morality in the hemisphere, contrasting him with Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro. She emphasized that freedom, capitalism, and democracy still hold promise, a sentiment echoed by Trump, who is keen on aiding Latin America in its pursuit of shared values.
