Ocasio-Cortez and Sanders criticize Trump at Mamdani rally

Ocasio-Cortez and Sanders Back Progressive Candidate Amidst Trump Tensions

On Sunday night, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York and Senator Bernie Sanders from Vermont channeled their frustrations toward President Trump while supporting Zoran Mamdani, a progressive candidate for mayor of New York City.

Speaking to a sizable crowd of Mamdani supporters in Queens, both Ocasio-Cortez and Sanders took direct aim at Trump, implying that a victory for Mamdani could resonate well beyond the city’s borders.

“Zoran’s election is as vital as our cause today,” Ocasio-Cortez asserted during the rally. “Issues like childcare, public transport, rent – all our rights matter here in New York City, which is, arguably, a hub of what’s possible in America.”

“And on November 4, we’ll show the world and send a clear message to President Donald Trump that his authoritarian ways don’t belong here,” she added.

The progressive leaders emphasized the significance of the election’s broader context while addressing Trump directly.

“This is America, New York City. Don’t let anyone convince you otherwise. We’re not the exception; we’re the rule,” she said. “I’m speaking to you, Donald Trump.”

In his remarks, Sanders introduced Mamdani—who appears to be the frontrunner in next week’s election—and expressed that his election would spark inspiration worldwide.

“At a time when many Americans feel uncertain politically and economically, a win here in New York can ignite hope and encouragement for people both domestically and globally,” Sanders remarked.

“This election is pivotal, which is why Trump has his eyes set on it. Everyday folks, regardless of their background—be it race, sexuality, or class—are uniting against what Trump dreads most: an oligarchy,” he continued.

“Brothers and sisters, in the next eight days, with your support, these young men can make history,” he noted.

Mamdani and Trump have had their share of exchanges during the campaign. Recently, Trump cautioned that should Mamdani become mayor, he would face significant challenges with Washington, more than any previous mayor of New York.

Previously, on Truth Social, Trump criticized Mamdani as a “self-proclaimed communist” vying for mayor, suggesting this could serve the interests of the Republican Party.

“Remember, he will need funding from me as president to meet any of the so-called promises he makes,” Trump declared. “What’s the point in electing him if he won’t have access to that?”
