Fashion Moment at the “Wicked: For Good” Press Tour
The buzz around the “Wicked: For Good” press tour is already palpable. Ariana Grande made a striking fashion statement by donning a rare 1940s dress designed by the iconic MGM costume designer Gilbert Adrian for the classic film, The Wizard of Oz.
Stylist Law Roach took to Instagram, sharing a black-and-white photo and adding, “And then this happened… Ali wearing Adrian! Just a piece of Hollywood history.”
Adrian, often credited as the mind behind “Adrian’s Gown,” served as MGM’s chief costume designer from 1928 until 1941. His work on Oz truly solidified his legendary status.
Roach emphasized Adrian’s influence in film history, mentioning memorable costumes like Dorothy’s gingham dress and ruby slippers, as well as Glinda’s signature pink gown. “These Adrian originals reshaped the landscape of film and fashion,” he noted.
After departing MGM, Adrian established his own fashion line, Gowns by Adrian. His vision included bold designs, striking silhouettes, and meticulous tailoring—elements that have continued to resonate in the fashion world.
Grande’s vintage dress is currently available on luxury vintage platform 1stDibs for $15,000 and features an eye-catching “winged” capelet back, along with delicate rhinestones that give it a subtle shimmer.
The pop star’s mother, Joan Grande, shared her admiration for the ensemble, applauding Roach for thoughtfully selecting a piece with deep significance to the film. Many fans echoed her praise, with one commenting on the enchanting quality of Grande in the dress.
Roach, known for his brief retirement from the styling scene in March 2023, has returned to work with Grande on this press tour. They have collaborated before, with Roach styling her from 2015 until 2020, after which Grande worked with another stylist.
As anticipation builds for the film’s release on November 21, 2024, Grande and Roach are expected to continue delivering memorable fashion moments, marking yet another highlight in their dynamic partnership.
