Alabama Bonfire Shooting Leads to Murder Charges

The individual implicated in the Alabama bonfire shooting, which resulted in the injury of three individuals and the death of a cheerleader, has now been charged with murder.

Authorities report that 18-year-old Kimber Mills was fatally shot during a gathering in Pinson, Alabama, early on October 19. The incident occurred in a location referred to locally as The Pit. Steven Tyler Whitehead, 27, allegedly arrived at the scene around 12:24 a.m. and fired his weapon multiple times following a confrontation.

Initially, Whitehead faced three counts of attempted murder; however, after Mills’ tragic passing, he was charged with murder.

Kimber’s sister, Ashley Mills, expressed her grief on Facebook, revealing that Kimber died Wednesday evening. A senior at Cleveland High School, Kimber was known for her involvement in track and cheerleading.

In her post, Ashley shared, “Our sweet little sister went to be with the Lord last night at 7:08 p.m.! She had the largest Honor Walk gathering the doctor has ever seen! She was and is loved by so many. We will miss Kimber!”

Reports suggest Kimber was unintentionally caught in crossfire during the incident. Silas McKay, who was present, mentioned that he confronted Whitehead before the situation escalated into violence.

“My ex-girlfriend came up to me and mentioned something about Kimber,” McKay described. “When I intervened, I put him on the ground, but he then pulled out a gun and started shooting.”

Kimber had aspirations of studying nursing at the University of Alabama in 2026. After her injuries were determined to be too severe, an honor walk was conducted, resulting in her heart being donated to a young child.

Riley Silbo, a friend of Kimber, reflected on her life, stating, “I would rather be known for her upbeat personality and big smile than for her tragedy.” She added that Kimber brought joy and light into many lives.
