Newlyweds Stranded in Jamaica as Hurricane Melissa Approaches
What began as a dream honeymoon for Texas couple Cassidy and Hunter Bishop quickly turned into a nightmare when they found themselves trapped in Jamaica as Category 5 Hurricane Melissa threatened the island. The hurricane is projected to produce sustained winds of 175 miles per hour, which would make it the most powerful hurricane to hit Jamaica to date. Local officials are warning about the dangers of life-threatening flash floods, landslides, and extensive damage.
The Bishops were in Montego Bay, on the northwest coast, just prior to the issuance of the evacuation order. Following that, the airport was shut down and all flights were canceled, leaving them and many other tourists stranded as the storm approached.
“All we’re hearing is how intense the storm is going to be, and honestly, we have no idea what’s going to happen at this point,” Hunter mentioned in a comment to local news.
Cassidy expressed a mix of emotions; she initially hoped the hurricane would keep them from heading home, but as the reality of the storm set in, they sought shelter. “At least I feel pretty safe here!” she posted on TikTok, adding that she was grateful to have a place to stay. “I just keep praying for everyone here and for your protection!!!”
As Hurricane Melissa continues to move northeast, countries like Cuba are preparing for the looming threat of heavy rains, flooding, storm surges, and damaging winds, even in areas not directly on the hurricane’s path.
The last major hurricane to hit Jamaica was Hurricane Gilbert in 1988, which was a Category 4 storm and remains one of the island’s deadliest events. In its wake, hundreds were left homeless, and many sought refuge in overcrowded shelters. Although the death toll was relatively low at 45, the devastation it caused was immense, with damages nearing $800 million.
