Halloween Prank Turned Scary in Northern Virginia
Earlier this month, a video captured a frightening scene at a home in Northern Virginia. Three individuals, dressed in terrifying Halloween costumes, were seen banging on the front door late at night, making alarming threats to those inside.
“Either you come out or we come in!” one of the voices shouted. Another could be heard demanding, “Open the door!” The situation escalated quickly. Sheila, a woman who was staying at the house with her mother, recounted how her heart sank when they said they would break down the door.
Sheila reported that the knocking intensified, echoing throughout the house. Feeling desperate, she called 911 and warned the group that help was on the way. Surprisingly, this threat didn’t stop them—instead, they continued to scream and attempt to force their way in. To make things worse, Sheila shared that they even “threatened to kill us.”
In a frantic attempt to escape, Sheila moved to the back of the house when they couldn’t get in through the front. After the chaos, she mentioned the damage done, pointing to her destroyed backyard fence and smashed screened door. “They just kept punching the windows,” she expressed, clearly shaken. “When they said they would take chairs to break down the door, I couldn’t believe it. It felt like too much.”
Sheila expressed concern for her mother, especially given the recent loss of her father. “I’m just glad I was there, but now she’s scared. She doesn’t want to be alone there,” she said.
Fortunately, after about ten minutes of chaos, the situation calmed down. Reflecting on the incident, Sheila felt relieved it didn’t escalate further, stating, “We certainly could have been in a worse position.” She emphasized that “dressing up and showing up at people’s doors at odd hours is just not okay, no matter the holiday.”
As of October 17, police were investigating the incident as an attempted robbery. Alexandria Police Chief Tarik McGuire addressed the community, announcing that the statements made by the trio were serious and threatening.
Eventually, the truth came out—what appeared to be a frightening attack was actually a prank gone wrong. It turned out that some relatives of the victim were behind the costumes and video. Chief McGuire noted that the prank could have had deadly consequences, especially since one of the victims had called for help from his brother, who arrived with a firearm.
Police took over 100 hours investigating, and tips from the community played a crucial role in identifying the individuals involved. Ultimately, the victims chose not to press charges, with the police expressing hope this would serve as a learning experience for the family, remarking that both the conduct and encouragement of such behavior were troubling.
