Nets Start Season with Struggles

The Nets are experiencing a historically rough beginning to their season.

So far, they’ve conceded 522 points over just four games, marking the highest total in the franchise’s history.

This defensive struggle isn’t entirely unexpected, given that the Nets have the youngest roster in the NBA and are facing continued challenges from last season.

Head coach Jordi Fernandez has the tough task of fostering a winning environment while also positioning the team for a potentially high draft pick next year.

It’s now up to Fernandez to tackle these issues, who labeled the team’s defense as “unacceptable” following their loss on Monday. After allowing a season-high 137 points to Houston, they now face the Hawks at home on Wednesday.

“A lot of them are just inexperienced, but we’re going to challenge them,” Fernandez expressed after the Rockets’ game. He emphasized the need for focus in every second on the court regardless of playtime. “Attention to detail and effort are crucial. I believe the players will learn from this,” he said.

He remains hopeful, but if the team doesn’t improve, they may endure an even longer season than anticipated.

Interestingly, the Nets have surrendered over 130 points in three out of their first four contests, a stark contrast to just seven occurrences last year.

The Rockets’ performance, particularly their 42 points in the first quarter, showcased significant defensive deficiencies. Houston even opened the second half with a 14-4 spree, capitalizing on the Nets’ lackluster defense.

“They were getting out in transition, and nobody turned to defend,” Dayron Sharp noted. “We need to communicate better on defense… It really comes down to making sure we’re in the right positions.”

Fernandez pointed out a recurring issue during the early third quarter as a pain point for the team.

“That third quarter was subpar, and we’ll address it,” he said. “We need to sharpen our attention on both ends. It can definitely improve.”

Currently, the Nets’ pace of giving up points is unprecedented.

With 130.5 points allowed per game, they hold the worst defensive record in the league, also giving up a staggering 53.7 attempts on goal from rivals, which includes a 46 percent success rate on three-pointers.

“If you’ve surrendered 140 points and the shooting percentage is at 50, it doesn’t paint a pretty picture,” Fernandez remarked, while acknowledging the team’s current lack of success. “But we know we can elevate our game. We have to keep a positive mindset and ensure accountability among everyone.”

In terms of player status, Giare Williams, who missed Monday’s game due to a lower back and hip injury, is questionable for the upcoming match. Meanwhile, Egor Demin, who was rested for injury management related to a torn plantar fascia, has been cleared for play.
