Mike Sullivan chooses experienced players in Rangers' lineup change

Changes in Rangers Lineup Ahead of Canucks Game

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Just before Tuesday’s 2-0 victory against the Canucks, Rangers head coach Mike Sullivan decided to shuffle the lineup, favoring experienced players over younger ones.

Brennan Osman was swapped out for Johnny Brodzinski after Osman had an off night in Calgary, where the Rangers lost 5-1. Brodzinski took the right wing position, while Osman found himself watching the game from the press box.

“After Lehigh Valley and the rookie game, I talked with him to clarify what we expected and how he might secure a roster spot,” Sullivan mentioned regarding Osman. “The key aspects include attention to detail, reliability, and understanding your responsibilities, especially playing away from the puck. That’s where he needs to focus. We want to see those elements as crucial for him to earn his place.”

“He showed some promise in the last game but had moments where he could’ve done better, especially in keeping the puck away from the net. We’ll keep working with him on those finer points.”

Additionally, Sullivan opted to rethink the defense lineup, marking a shift since Carson Soucy’s return from injured reserve on October 20.

Matthew Robertson, who had played in seven consecutive games, was healthy scratched this time. Consequently, Urho Vaakanainen made it back onto the lineup for the first time since October 18. The 26-year-old defender had also been a healthy scratch for his last three games.

“We believe we have seven capable defensemen,” Sullivan remarked. “Lobo has been effective, bringing physicality and confidence. He reads plays well, knows when to pinch, and simplifies the game while adding a physical aspect. We felt it was time to get him into the mix.”

“For young players, consistency is key. Some recent games haven’t met that level, and we’ll be working with them. Quinney checks in with them regularly. Varks is also very skilled. It’s a competitive environment, and everyone wants to play. We’re aiming to make choices that give our team the best shot at winning.”

“We evaluate everything after each game and make decisions based on that.”

Unfortunately, Matt Lempe didn’t make the trip due to an upper-body injury diagnosed in New York. Sullivan indicated he might be sidelined for an “extended period.”

On a brighter note, Vincent Trocheck has resumed skating after being on long-term injury reserve for nine games with an upper-body issue.

The Canucks, on the other hand, were missing key player Quinn Hughes for a second straight game due to a lower-body injury, alongside several other regulars.

JT Miller lightheartedly commented, “I wish I had seen him yesterday more than today,” regarding how he and former teammate Adam Foote connected on Monday.
