As President Donald Trump intensifies efforts to combat illegal immigration, Democratic Senator Dick Durbin from Illinois has voiced strong criticism, asserting that the administration is instilling fear among immigrants. “People are afraid to attend church, go shopping, send their kids to school, or dine out. It’s all ICE’s doing, and that’s not the America I know,” he stated.
In response, White House press secretary Abigail Jackson pointed out that the narrative pushed by Democratic leaders has led to a staggering increase in assaults on ICE agents. “Instead of addressing the issue, Democrats continue with misleading claims,” she said. The Trump Administration emphasizes its priority of deporting dangerous criminal aliens, arguing that securing the border quickly is essential to protect American communities.
Comments on Durbin’s remarks mirrored similar views he expressed during a public speech, where he even drew historical parallels to the internment of Japanese Americans in World War II.
In a statement, Tricia McLaughlin from the Department of Homeland Security noted that over 2 million illegal immigrants have departed the U.S., with a significant portion removed voluntarily compared to those forcibly deported.
Meanwhile, Jackson emphasized that this is merely the start of renewed efforts under Trump’s leadership, suggesting a revitalization of an agency that has faced difficulties in the past years.
Durbin, who has been a member of the Senate since 1997 and served in the House prior to that, announced earlier this year his decision not to run for re-election in 2026. He will turn 81 next month.
