Ohio Woman Sentenced to Life for Stabbing

An Ohio woman has received a life sentence without the possibility of parole for fatally stabbing a 3-year-old boy and injuring his mother outside a grocery store.

Bionka Ellis, 34, from Cleveland, reportedly displayed no emotion during her sentencing, which was delivered by Cuyahoga County Judge John Russo. This sentence comes after the tragic June 2024 incident that claimed the life of 3-year-old Julianne Wood and wounded her mother, Margot Wood, 37.

“I have witnessed acts of unimaginable violence, but this is one of the most heartbreaking,” said Prosecutor Michael C. O’Malley. “Bionka Ellis’s actions deserve nothing less than a life sentence without parole.”

Even with her lawyer arguing for a not guilty plea due to insanity, a jury found Ellis guilty earlier this month on multiple charges, including aggravated murder and child endangerment.

Her attorney, Fernando Mack, argued that it was wrong to consider her competent at the time of the incident, pointing out that she had suffered from severe mental illness. He noted, “I accept that it was only in that moment, that day, that she was okay.”

The horrifying attack occurred outside a Giant Eagle supermarket in North Olmsted. Authorities mentioned that Ellis had stolen knives from a nearby thrift store and followed Julian and her mother into the parking lot. As Margot was putting groceries in her car, Ellis lunged at her with a knife, stabbing the child before fleeing.

Tragically, Julianne succumbed to her injuries in the hospital, while Margot Wood was treated for a stab wound to the shoulder.
