Stabbing Incident in Downtown Nantucket

A stabbing took place on Tuesday morning in downtown Nantucket, very close to the ferry terminal that caters to many summer tourists visiting the upscale Massachusetts island, according to local authorities.

Nantucket Police reported that officers were called to South Beach Street, situated between Broad and Oak Streets, at around 10:23 a.m. The location is near a bustling commercial area right next to the Steamship Authority’s ferry terminal, which tends to attract numerous visitors into the island’s historic downtown.

The victim received immediate attention at the scene before being transported to Nantucket Cottage Hospital by the local fire department, police indicated.

This incident unfolded in one of the busiest parts of Nantucket.

Witnesses shared that the stabbing followed a confrontation between the driver of a garbage truck, identified as Miles Reis, and the driver of a nearby Sails Seafood delivery truck.

Reportedly, after being stabbed, the victim fled towards The Strip, where staff from nearby businesses, like Stubby’s, attempted to staunch the bleeding until first responders arrived.

A second individual involved in the altercation was detained at the scene, according to authorities.

As of Tuesday evening, the police had not disclosed the identity of the suspect, though an arraignment is planned for Wednesday morning at Nantucket District Court. The investigation remains active, and no further details were available at that time.

This incident coincides with the peak tourist season for Nantucket, when the typically serene island becomes bustling with vacationers, transient workers, and affluent residents.

Massachusetts State Police have refrained from providing additional information and directed inquiries to the Nantucket Police Department.
