Former prosecutor dismissed by Trump administration joins Gov. Gavin Newsom's staff

Michele Beckwith, who previously served as an acting U.S. attorney in Sacramento, has reportedly landed a new role with California Governor Gavin Newsom’s administration following her recent dismissal by the Trump administration.

Newsom has appointed Beckwith as his deputy attorney general, a position that will involve providing legal counsel to the governor and various state agencies. A spokesperson for Newsom, Tara Gallegos, remarked that “Trump’s loss is California’s gain,” highlighting Beckwith’s two decades of legal expertise as a significant asset.

In an interview, Beckwith emphasized that her motivation is not political but rather focused on the preservation of democracy and the Constitution, stating, “If there’s anything I can do to preserve our democracy, I’m happy to do it.”

She was terminated from her previous role following a conflict with Greg Bovino, the head of border control in El Centro, California, over a court ruling concerning immigration arrests. Beckwith was dismissed just hours after a court order was issued, restricting Bovino’s ability to make arrests without proper suspicion of violating federal law. Shortly after her firing, reports indicate Bovino conducted a raid at a Home Depot parking lot, leading to numerous arrests for undocumented immigration.

Following the incident, Newsom’s office criticized the Trump administration for Beckwith’s firing, suggesting it was due to her commitment to upholding the law. They declared, “Wake up, America. Democracy is on the brink!”

The ongoing tensions between Newsom and President Trump extend beyond Beckwith’s case. Recently, the Trump administration’s Department of Transportation threatened to withhold $40 million in funding from California, citing the state’s failure to meet required English language proficiency standards for commercial drivers. This was framed by Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy as a significant safety concern for all drivers.

Additionally, there have been recent reports linking fatal trucking accidents to undocumented immigrants possessing commercial driver’s licenses issued by California. The situation has garnered attention after a catastrophic accident allegedly involving an undocumented driver raised serious questions about CDL issuance protocols.

As these developments unfold, it’s evident that the clash between state and federal policies continues to impact key legal and safety issues, especially in California.
