New York City Mayoral Race Takes a Turn
On November 3, 2023, Mayor Eric Adams of New York City found himself needing to return to the city unexpectedly while en route to Washington, D.C. He was supposed to talk about the border crisis with the Biden administration, but an FBI raid on a prominent funder’s home forced him back to New York.
Looking back, this moment might have actually paved the way for socialist candidate Zoran Mamdani to become the mayor of New York City.
Prior to this incident, Adams had been holding approval ratings in the high 30s to low 40s. Not terrible for a big-city mayor, right? But just a month after his aborted trip, those numbers plummeted to 25%, and he never quite bounced back.
The investigation that led to Adams’ indictment stemmed from something rather trivial—a controversy over upgrades to planes from donors. However, many speculated that the real issue was Adams openly challenging President Biden regarding the border crisis.
Adams Withdraws from Mayoral Race
During this period, New York City was inundated with immigrants arriving daily, which strained hotel capacities and led to makeshift shelters popping up throughout the boroughs.
By September 2023, Adams had begun criticizing the White House publicly amid a steady influx of people entering the city, sometimes via covert flights. He even took part in rallies against the government’s handling of the situation.
Fast forward two months, and the federal indictment against Adams had effectively derailed his political career. By the following year, prominent Democrats, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, were calling for his resignation.
This chaos created an opportunity for socialists. With Adams’ influence waning, he was on a downward trajectory.
What was particularly frustrating about the Biden administration’s response was that, for the most part, Adams had been doing a commendable job—much better than his predecessor, the socialist Bill de Blasio. When de Blasio left office in 2022, things in Midtown were chaotic, filled with homelessness and crime. Adams made significant strides to improve those conditions relatively quickly.
Impact of Adams’ Withdrawal on the Mayoral Race
While I’m not suggesting a name change for the airport after Adams, it’s undeniable that he brought some much-needed stability after eight difficult years.
However, the Biden administration viewed Adams as a liability, especially regarding the border crisis. His criticisms were putting pressure on the President.
Today, with the recent discussions around securing the southern border under President Trump, many Democrats are beginning to admit that Biden hasn’t handled illegal immigration well.
If only the Biden crowd had seen Adams’ criticisms as a chance to reshape their border policies instead of sidestepping him, perhaps the political landscape leading up to the 2024 election would look different. But that’s pure speculation. What’s certain is that the charges against Adams opened the door for Mamdani to rise in the political scene.
Democratic Party’s Shift
Adams’ indictment is just one example of how Democrats seem to have inadvertently empowered a more radical faction within their party. From backing laws that cater to the far left to hesitating to denounce socialism outright, they’ve created a complex situation.
Now, Zoran Mamdani appears to be a force in his own right, garnering crowds across the nation, similar to socialist figures like Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders.
The meeting Adams was supposed to have with the White House on border-related issues in November 2023 never happened, yet it marked a significant pivot in the city’s political future—though not in a positive way.
Today, the Democratic Party seems more aligned with democratic socialism, with even figures like House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries appearing to pivot toward Marxism. If Mamdani has his way, New York City could drift even closer to a socialistic ideology.
The key question remains: can both the Democratic Party and New York City fully recover from these changes?
