Irish Singer Dropped from Istanbul Festival Over Transgender Comments

Roisin Murphy, an Irish singer, has been removed from her headlining role at a music festival in Istanbul after she made controversial remarks regarding transgender identity. This decision came following her October 21 social media post, which featured a graph indicating a decline in the number of 18- to 22-year-olds identifying as transgender or non-binary since 2021. In her comments, Murphy expressed that transgenderism “was never real,” adding that it has caused significant distress for children, families, and society as a whole.

Despite the backlash, Murphy has not issued an apology and continues to share her views online. The festival organizers, concerned about her recent statements, announced that they felt uncomfortable proceeding with her as a headliner. They previously believed she had the right energy for the role, but that changed in light of her comments.

In their statement, the organizers noted that her recent remarks had altered their perception of her participation. They emphasized their commitment to the values they wish to promote at the festival and stated that financial implications would not sway their decision to exclude her from the lineup. They assured that the festival would continue as planned, with a new headliner to be announced soon.

Murphy has defended her stance, criticizing what she describes as “cruel” activism from some transgender advocates. She insists that she won’t be pressured to change her views, expressing that she finds the demands for compliance childish. “I will not be held to ransom,” she declared, urging for artistic freedom and the right to convey her opinions.

She elaborated that her statement about transgender identity being “not real” refers to what she perceives as an epidemic driven by media influence and social media disruptions. She concluded with a call for a critical review of what she considers the harmful implications of trans ideology.

Following the controversy, Turkish singer-songwriter Kalben has been announced as her replacement for the festival.
