Alabama man taken into custody for suspected threats against a synagogue, weapons cache confiscated.

An Alabama man has been arrested after authorities discovered a troubling plot aimed at carrying out violence against synagogues in Alabama and nearby states.

Jeremy Wayne Shoemaker, 33, from Needham, was apprehended after both the FBI and local law enforcement received information about “credible threats of violence” targeting several synagogues, according to a news release from the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.

“A potential act of violence was thwarted last night,” the sheriff’s office stated.

During the investigation, officers confiscated a suitcase filled with weapons, ammunition, bulletproof vests, and other items believed to be connected to the violent scheme from Shoemaker’s home.

Clark County Sheriff Dwayne Smith told FOX10 WALA, “He had a significant amount of ammunition, some older and some new. He possessed a recently acquired assault rifle that was loaded with an extended magazine, and the way he organized the ammunition indicated he was ready to go out and use it.”

Interestingly, the ongoing investigation revealed that Shoemaker appeared to have no intention of being captured alive. “He intended to engage with law enforcement, but ultimately, his tactics led to his failure to do so,” Smith noted, adding that Shoemaker’s injuries in his mugshot were from resisting arrest.

There were also allegations that Shoemaker might have been plotting to target a public figure. As the investigation continues, details about the individuals he allegedly aimed to attack are not yet available, nor is the name of the synagogue he was said to be targeting.

Shoemaker faces charges for resisting arrest and being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm. There is a possibility of additional federal charges as the case develops.

He is currently being held on a $150,000 cash bail, with a court appearance scheduled for November 7th.
