Sen. Fetterman Critiques Party Amid Government Shutdown
Senator John Fetterman, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, garnered praise from some Republicans after he publicly criticized his own party over the ongoing partial government shutdown and the potential impact on food stamp assistance.
“As a dedicated Democrat, I feel let down that my party is jeopardizing food security for 42 million people. I reject any political maneuvering that puts vulnerable groups at risk of serious hardship,” Fetterman expressed during an interview on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, a statement from the U.S. Department of Agriculture indicated the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is experiencing significant funding shortages, warning that “no benefits will be issued on November 1.”
Fetterman pointed to a crucial moment for Senate Democrats, stating they must choose between safeguarding medical care for undocumented immigrants or reopening the government to ensure essential nutritional support for mothers and children.
Despite Fetterman’s consistent support for temporary funding measures to resolve the shutdown, the votes have not met the required threshold in the Senate to be successful.
Responses from Republicans to Fetterman’s comments have been largely appreciative. “Thank you, @SenFettermanPA, for your rational approach and putting the American people first,” wrote Rep. Kat Cammack from Florida.
Rep. Eli Crane, a Republican from Arizona, noted Fetterman’s stance as a rarity among Democrats, lamenting that some party members, like Senators Kerry and Gallego, remain loyal to party lines instead of prioritizing constituents’ needs.
Another Republican, Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick from Pennsylvania, affirmed Fetterman’s remarks with a simple endorsement: “Well said.”
In a subsequent post, Fetterman added, “Workers are being forced to take out loans just to get by. This situation, from my perspective as a Democrat, is not conducive to supporting working families. It’s time to end this shutdown or take responsibility.”
