Trump Administration Expands D.C. Crime Task Force
The Trump administration is ramping up efforts to tackle crime in Washington, D.C., by expanding the task force initiated in early 2025. This expansion includes the launch of a new hiring portal accessible to law enforcement agencies nationwide, as reported by FOX News Digital.
Each night, over 2,000 law enforcement personnel are actively supporting the task force, and the administration is looking to increase this number with a recruitment drive. The hiring portal, named SAFEDC.GOV, opened on Wednesday, inviting law enforcement officers to apply for positions within federal agencies participating in this initiative.
Those selected will work with the task force for up to a year, focusing on its early implementation. Candidates can look forward to various perks, such as hiring bonuses, medical benefits, federal pensions, and paid time off.
This announcement comes on the heels of President Trump’s recurring praise for the task force’s achievements in D.C., using it as a model for other cities with similar crime issues.
Washington, D.C., has not been immune to the surge in violent crime noted nationwide in 2020, particularly as homicides escalated. The following year saw an alarming increase in juvenile carjackings that tragically resulted in fatalities. Other violent incidents included assaults on government employees and the heartbreaking shooting of a 21-year-old intern in June.
Democratic leaders have contested President Trump’s approach to crime in D.C., criticizing it as an “abuse of power” at a time when crime rates have reportedly been declining since 2020.
Trump recently reflected on a notable shift in community sentiment, stating, “I went from being the most dangerous place anywhere to now having friends, Democrats calling me to say, ‘Thank you, Doctor. Last night, my wife and I went out to dinner for the first time in four years, and Washington, D.C., is safe.'” This dramatic change, he claims, was achieved in a few days.
Earlier this year, Trump signed an executive order to establish the D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force aimed at enhancing safety and aesthetics in the city. In August, he further declared a crime emergency, which led to federalizing the police department.
Amidst the ongoing enforcement efforts, hundreds of National Guard troops are currently patrolling key areas in the city, like Union Station.
More than 20 federal and local law enforcement agencies are involved with the task force, which has recorded over 5,000 arrests since it began. According to data from the White House, this initiative has helped rescue 14 missing children and confiscate over 400 firearms in the city.
Trump recently emphasized the importance of the recruitment portal in yet another executive order issued on August 25, instructing that an online platform be created to facilitate applications for federal law enforcement roles aimed at addressing the objectives outlined in a prior executive order.
Currently, President Trump is on a week-long tour of Asia, where discussions with foreign leaders about trade and regional security are taking place. During a recent meeting with U.S. military personnel in Japan, he pointed to the progress made in ensuring safety in Washington, D.C., since the crime crackdown began.
He stated, “Crime is close to zero. It’s a whole different ballgame now. It took literally 12 days to see change, but let’s give it a month to fully realize it. We’ve done a solid job, and our military personnel are committed, whether it’s the National Guard or even Space Force. We now have a safe city, and we’re starting with Memphis, which was in a precarious state.”
