Bryan Kohberger is paid while in jail, according to the DA, despite claims for restitution.

Convicted murderer Brian Koberger, who is serving multiple life sentences for the deaths of four University of Idaho students, has reportedly received financial support from his family and unspecified supporters while incarcerated. This information emerged in a recent court filing which also indicates that Koberger’s defense team is arguing he should not be required to pay his full restitution obligations. His attorney claims that due to his current and future incarceration, he is incapable of making these payments.

Prosecutors, however, highlighted that Koberger has a record of receiving financial assistance from both family and outside sources. They pointed to confidential documents that detail his finances while in two different jail facilities.

Under a plea deal, Koberger is required to pay over $250,000 in fines and fees to the families of the victims, along with additional civil judgments. However, his lawyers are contesting specific amounts claimed for travel and lodging by the families, arguing that these don’t constitute economic loss since they have already received considerable support through crowdfunding efforts.

There are lingering questions about whether Koberger will ever share his side of the story. Interestingly, he has a background in criminal psychology, having studied under a notable forensic psychologist, and has authored works based on interviews with serial offenders. However, any potential earnings from discussing his crimes may be limited due to state laws designed to prevent criminals from profiting from their actions.

It’s also worth noting that Idaho law stipulates that earnings from stories shared by criminals are directed to state funds and can be claimed by victims’ families through civil suits.

Koberger continues to serve his sentences at the Idaho State Correctional Facility in Kuna, where he remains as of now.
