U.K. Incentives Fuel Daniel Craig’s “Knives Out” Film

The production company behind Daniel Craig’s upcoming film, “Knives Out,” has secured a substantial $41 million from the British government to film scenes in London that represent the suburban landscape of New York. This development sheds light on how foreign governments attract major American film projects, which has become a concerning trend for Hollywood.

According to a filing with the UK Companies Registry, this financial support has brought the production costs of Netflix’s “Wake Up Dead Man: Knives Out Mystery” down to $151.7 million. While the overall budget was initially pegged at $192.7 million—definitely high by any standard—the adjusted figure aligns with the intended production budget.

The grant comes from the UK Audiovisual Spending Credit, a program that offers a cash refund of 25.5% on eligible production expenses for film and high-end TV projects in the United Kingdom.

This aggressive incentive program has ruffled feathers, particularly for President Trump, who in May threatened to impose a hefty 100% tariff on films made in “foreign countries” and then brought to the U.S. While he didn’t follow through at that time, he reiterated the threat last month. In the wake of this, several Hollywood figures, including Jon Voight, have urged the president to consider tax incentives for U.S. productions, making them more competitive.

In Los Angeles, the number of filming days fell by 35.7% in 2022 compared to 2019, marking it as one of the least productive years since 1995. And, unfortunately, things haven’t turned around much since then. Just looking at the numbers, FilmLA has reported that in the months leading up to September, production levels in Los Angeles were even lower than during the recent strikes by actors and writers, which the agency attributes to continued job losses to competing regions.

On the flip side, foreign studios accounted for about 87% of the estimated $2.2 billion spent on film production in the UK last year, representing a 7.6% increase from 2019, according to the British Film Institute.

The original “Knives Out” was filmed in Massachusetts. However, after the writers and actors reached a new pay agreement following the strike, the production costs soared. While Hollywood studios often keep their financials under wraps, those filming in the UK must provide detailed expenditure reports. Interestingly, “Knives Out” was made with a budget of $5.9 million, involving a 61-member team over a span from June to August last year. Yet, specific payment details for key staff remain undisclosed.

Looking ahead, the third film in this Netflix series, which features Craig as the charming detective Benoît Blanc, is set to hit theaters next month and will stream on Netflix just two weeks before Christmas. The production company, Sweet Beans Productions, is led by director Rian Johnson and producer Ram Bergman.

Given the success of the first two movies, one might expect that the third will achieve similar results. Interestingly, Netflix’s stock recently dropped by 10% following disappointing third-quarter results, which might add some pressure to the film’s performance. As of now, Netflix hasn’t provided any comments on this situation.
