Warner expresses anger over Democrats being excluded from boat strikes briefing

Warner Criticizes Trump’s Unilateral Military Actions

Senator Mark Warner (D-Va.), who leads the Democrats on the Senate Intelligence Committee, has voiced strong objections to the Trump administration following reports that Republicans were briefed about a planned unilateral military action targeting suspected drug trafficking vessels in the Caribbean.

In a stark statement, Warner described the situation as “indefensible,” raising concerns over the “troubling precedent” it could establish.

“Excluding Democrats from military briefings and withholding legal justifications from half the Senate is dangerous,” he remarked. “Decisions regarding military force should not be treated as if they belong to one political group or as part of a campaign strategy.”

Furthermore, he emphasized that such actions could undermine national security and infringe upon Congress’s role in overseeing matters of war and peace.

Warner pointed out, “This partisan behavior disrespects Congress’s war powers and those who serve in our military. It sets a reckless and alarming precedent.”

Concerns have risen among both parties regarding the lack of transparency over the president’s unilateral military strikes against presumed drug cartel ships in the Caribbean.

The Trump administration has acknowledged executing more than a dozen attacks on these vessels, which are purportedly used for drug trafficking into the U.S. Some senators argue that these actions are unconstitutional in the absence of Congressional approval, while others are simply seeking more information.

Earlier this month, CNN reported that the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) had crafted a legal opinion to justify these military actions.

In his statement, Warner insisted that Democrats should have access to this legal justification.

“The administration needs to provide Democrats with the same explanation and OLC opinion regarding these strikes. Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently promised to meet with me about this,” Warner stated.

He concluded by asserting, “Americans deserve a government that upholds its constitutional duties and treats military decisions with the gravity they warrant.”

The White House, Pentagon, and State Department did not respond to inquiries regarding this matter.
