Aussie Mayor Prohibits Outdoor Gas Barbecues Citing Environmental Concerns

Ban on Outdoor Gas Barbecues in Sydney

In Sydney, Australia, a recent decision has been made to restrict cooking on certain outdoor gas barbecues. This move is part of an effort led by the mayor to meet net-zero emissions goals and contribute to environmental protection.

The Sydney City Council, under the leadership of Mayor Clover Moore, recently discussed new gas connections. Out of 84 public submissions, 60 supported proposals requiring all new homes and businesses to rely exclusively on electricity, aligning with local government directives.

“Relying on gas isn’t just bad for the planet; it affects our finances and health,” stated the mayor.

It has now been confirmed that this ban extends to outdoor gas appliances connected to a residential gas source. However, barbecues using portable gas cylinders will not fall under this restriction.

Moore argued that these changes would enhance residents’ health and save money—similar arguments were made when New York City imposed comparable restrictions in 2023. Yet, not everyone approves of the Sydney City Council’s increasing involvement in daily life, which extends beyond just grilling outdoors.

Radio presenter Ben Fordham expressed frustration, especially after news surfaced that patrons would no longer be allowed to stand and drink outside pubs. “That’s Clover’s world order,” he remarked. He pointed out how standing and drinking outdoors is now prohibited unless it’s at a cocktail table, much like cooking outside, which must also be done on electric barbecues rather than gas.

The new regulations are set to take effect on January 1, 2027. However, the reaction has been largely critical towards Mayor Moore, with many accusing her of overstepping and attempting to control city residents’ choices.

A spokesperson for the council mentioned their commitment to reducing emissions to net zero by 2035, highlighting that decreasing fossil fuel usage is essential in this initiative.

Interestingly, just days prior to Moore’s announcement, Bill Gates acknowledged that humanity faces more challenges than just “climate change,” adding a layer of irony to the situation regarding outdoor grilling.
