First Mosquitoes Found in Iceland

For the first time, mosquitoes have been discovered in Iceland. This Nordic island nation, known for its stunning landscapes and unique wildlife, is garnering attention as a popular travel destination.

Interestingly, Iceland had previously managed to remain free of mosquitoes until now. The Icelandic broadcaster RUV reported that scientists from the Icelandic Institute of Natural History confirmed this fascinating find.

Specifically, three mosquitoes were identified in western Iceland, close to Reykjavik, the capital and largest city. The discovery was made by Bjorn Hjartasson, who shared it in a Facebook group called ‘Insects of Iceland.’

“On the evening of October 16, just around dusk, I noticed an unusual fly on my band—it’s something I use to attract insects,” Hjartasson recounted. “We quickly had an idea of what we were looking at, and the fly was soon collected.”

Hjartasson then sent the specimen to the Institute of Natural History, where it was identified by entomologist Mathias Alfredsson as belonging to the species Chryseta annulata.

Alfredsson mentioned that this mosquito species might actually be “here to stay,” indicating its adaptability to colder climates. Scientists had long speculated that mosquitoes would eventually make their way to Iceland, but this marks the first confirmed instance.

Iceland has seen a notable rise in tourism recently, with the number of visitors jumping from about 813,000 in 2021 to more than three million in 2023. Overnight stays also soared from over three million to more than eight million.

Iceland’s captivating landscape features active volcanoes, natural hot springs, and breathtaking waterfalls. And during the colder months, many flock to see the mesmerizing Northern Lights; in spring and summer, there are chances to spot unique wildlife like puffins.
