Billie Eilish Supports Proposition 50 in California
Singer-songwriter Billie Eilish has shared a video encouraging support for Proposition 50, a referendum that Governor Gavin Newsom aims to use for redrawing California’s congressional districts, potentially impacting Republican representation.
In her message, Eilish stated, “I’m asking for your help. If you live in California like I do, please vote YES on Proposition 50 by November 4th. This is incredibly important. If you need help voting, please visit http://vote.ca.gov.”
Back in 2008, California voters approved a constitutional amendment that established an independent redistricting commission intended to keep districting decisions out of politicians’ control.
However, it seems that some Democrats have taken advantage of this system, using operatives to unseat Republican candidates by disguising themselves as regular residents to sway the commission.
The redistricting that occurred in 2010 and 2020 left some conservative or competitive districts intact. Presently, Republicans hold 9 out of 52 seats, which is around 17% of the total, reflecting roughly half of their voting share in the state.
Newsom’s proposed map could eliminate four or five of those seats, potentially decreasing Republican representation to below 10%. It’s worth noting that Proposition 50 could cost about $251 million for a special election, disenfranchising many California voters.
Additionally, Newsom seems to be reacting to Texas’ recent efforts to reshape electoral districts, which have faced scrutiny for allegedly violating racial considerations as outlined by the Justice Department after the last census.
The changes from the 2020 Census have had repercussions, unintentionally favoring liberal states over conservative ones and resulting in congressional maps that lean towards Democrats. As Republicans hold a slim majority in the House, Newsom is likely aiming to strengthen Democrats’ footing in national leadership in the party.
