Massachusetts Governor’s Executive Arrested on Drug Charges

Lamar Cook, a former staff member to Democratic Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey, was arrested on charges of drug trafficking after a shipment of cocaine was intercepted, allegedly destined for his workplace.

At 45 years old, Cook has been the head of Healey’s Western Massachusetts office since April 2023. His previous roles included membership on the Hospitality and Tourism Board Management Committee, as well as unsuccessful runs for Springfield City Council in 2015 and the School Committee in 2017.

On Wednesday, Cook pleaded not guilty and was ordered to remain in custody without bail. He also faces charges for unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

A spokesperson from the governor’s office indicated that Cook was immediately terminated after his arrest became known.

“The actions that occurred here are unacceptable and a serious breach of public trust,” the spokesperson commented. “This criminal investigation is ongoing, and our administration intends to work with law enforcement to assist in the investigation.”

Hampden County District Attorney Anthony Galluni reported that two packages of cocaine were seized by Massachusetts State Police, which were en route to Cook at a government building in Springfield, often referred to as the “mini statehouse.”

The initial package, discovered on October 10th, weighed around 13 kilograms (over 28 pounds). A subsequent seizure found another individual with 8 kilograms (more than 17 pounds) of cocaine, bringing the total to 21 kilograms (46 pounds).

Cook was arrested on Tuesday night during a traffic stop in Springfield. During his court appearance on Wednesday, he was seen in handcuffs and wearing a varsity jacket.

He remains in Hampden County Jail while awaiting a “dangerousness” hearing to assess whether he should be held without bail for up to 120 days.

If he is released following the hearing on Friday morning, Cook will need to pay a bail amount of $25,000 set by Judge William Rota.

“Mr. Cook, you will be our guest for a few days, but you will have a full and complete hearing on Friday,” Rota stated.

In the meantime, a tweet described the situation, noting Cook’s arrest on drug trafficking charges and allegations regarding his involvement with state government buildings in these activities.
