New York Mayoral Race Heats Up as Election Day Approaches

With the election just days away, Zoran Mamdani, the democratic socialist candidate for mayor in New York City, maintains a notable lead over independent hopeful Andrew Cuomo, the former governor.

A recent poll from Emerson College, PIX11, and The Hill indicates that Mamdani has 50% support, whereas Cuomo follows with 25%, and Republican Curtis Sliwa lags behind at 21%. In contrast, a Quinnipiac University poll from Wednesday reflects a tighter contest, showing Mamdani at 43% and Cuomo at 33%, while Sliwa is quite a bit lower with just 14%.

Interestingly, Emerson’s Spencer Kimball noted that Mamdani seems to resonate with diverse voter demographics, increasing his support among Black voters to 71%, up from 50% the previous month, whereas Cuomo’s support in that group has dipped by 10 points since September. Moreover, young voters, specifically those under 50, are predominantly backing Mamdani, with 69% supporting him compared to only 31% for Cuomo.

Despite Mamdani’s leads in various polls, another from the Marist Institute recently suggested Cuomo might have a slight edge, garnering 48% of the support while Mamdani trails at 32%. This has led some analysts, like Lee Miringoff from Marist, to suggest that while Mamdani is in a strong position, the battle is far from over.

Mamdani’s platform includes raising taxes on wealthy New Yorkers, freezing rents on stabilized units, and creating taxpayer-funded grocery stores and city buses. Notably, if Sliwa were to withdraw from the race, Mamdani’s lead over Cuomo would shrink to just seven points based on Marist’s findings.

Approval ratings further illustrate the divide; among voters under 45, Mamdani enjoys a significant 64% support compared to Cuomo’s 21%. However, among voters over 45, they are nearly tied, with 39% for Cuomo and 38% for Mamdani. Notably, 55% of Jewish voters favor Cuomo, with about a third supporting Mamdani despite his critical stance on Israel.

Mamdani previously defeated Cuomo in the Democratic primary in June, and since then, Cuomo has sought to remain competitive as an independent. Mamdani counted on support from progressive leaders, including Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, evident during a recent rally in Queens that drew thousands of attendees.

As Election Day nears, the dynamics of the race continue to shift, and it remains to be seen how voters will ultimately cast their ballots.
