Mike Reilly finds early payback after the Islanders do not renew his contract

Mike Riley Reflects on Transition from Islanders to Hurricanes

RALEIGH, N.C. — It seems that if Mike Riley had been extended a new deal by the Islanders this offseason, he probably would have said yes. But that opportunity just didn’t materialize.

Speaking before the Islanders faced the Hurricanes, Riley shared his experience: “I met with Lou Lamoriello after the season. We agreed to take a moment to assess the situation with the team and the players. Unfortunately, there wasn’t much information coming from New York.”

Now, with the Hurricanes, his perspective has changed. Following the Islanders’ acquisition of the top draft pick and the rights to Matthew Schaefer, it became clear that Riley’s time in New York was over. He ended up signing a $1.1 million deal with Carolina, and during Thursday’s game, he even scored a goal.

“I wouldn’t say I was sad about it. I had some great times,” Riley remarked. “Eventually, I realized I’d have to choose a different path, which is exactly what I did.”

Initially positioned as the seventh defenseman, injuries to Jacob Slavin and K’Andre Miller offered him a chance to step up on the lineup during the game against the Islanders.

“I think it was a good experience for my first year here,” Riley reflected. “Much like New York, many people have been in this area for years. There’s a familiar vibe, even though we have some new faces. You can see how they work together, consistently making playoffs and competing.”

Coach Rod Brind’Amour highlighted Riley’s contribution to the team’s defensive stability: “He’s been here the whole time. You know what to expect from him. He’s not out there to surprise anyone; he plays the game well, having adapted to various systems throughout his career.”

Meanwhile, Alexander Romanov returned to the ice after a stint on injured reserve. Coach Patrick Roy noted, “I thought he moved the puck effectively. His performance was impressive.” Additionally, Schaefer’s recent participation marked his official entry into a year on his entry-level contract with the Islanders.
