Search for Missing 9-Year-Old in California Continues
This week, multiple search warrants were executed in the ongoing investigation of a 9-year-old girl, Melody Buzzard, who has been missing since October 14. Authorities became aware of her absence when school officials reported her long unexplained absences. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office checked her home in Lompoc, but Melody was not present, and her mother, Ashley Buzzard, 35, couldn’t provide any clear information about her location.
The FBI has indicated that Melody might have traveled with her mother all the way to Nebraska before vanishing. On October 30, investigators conducted a follow-up operation at the Buzzard home and also examined both a storage unit and the rental car that was last seen with Melody.
As part of their investigation, the sheriff’s office noted challenges with cooperation from Melody’s mother, stating that she had not been particularly helpful to the investigators. They classified Melody as an “at-risk missing person,” highlighting the urgency of the case.
Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Lt. Chris Gotshall said that having additional expertise is crucial in cases like this, and collaboration with federal partners has been invaluable in leveraging all resources available. Recently, the sheriff’s office released new surveillance images of Melody.
One of the key developments includes a image taken at a rental car facility on October 7, where Melody was seen wearing a hooded sweatshirt and what looked like a wig, which was apparently different from her natural hair. Investigators suspect the wig may have been used to change her appearance. They clarified that Ashley is known to wear wigs as well.
Detectives have pinpointed a timeline of interest from October 7 to October 10. During this period, Ashley was seen using the rental car, but Melody was not in it when it was returned to their home in Lompoc. Initial reports suggest their journey may have taken them to the Nebraska area and back through Kansas, but the exact whereabouts of Melody during those days remain unclear.
Melody is described as around 4 feet 6 inches tall, weighing approximately 60 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. The local FBI field office is actively assisting in the search efforts.
