Campaign Team of Oyster Farming Democrat Keeps Fleeing

Controversy Surrounds Maine Senate Candidate Graham Platner

Graham Platner, a Democratic candidate for the Maine Senate, is facing turmoil within his campaign as his state finance director, Ronald Holmes, announced his resignation on Friday. This departure marks another setback for a campaign that’s been surrounded by controversies.

Holmes, who joined Platner’s team in August, stated he was leaving immediately, citing a misalignment with the campaign’s standards. His resignation follows the recent exits of Platner’s campaign manager, Kevin Brown, who left after less than a week, and political director Genevieve MacDonald, who resigned just two weeks prior.

In his statement, Holmes reflected on his reasons for joining the campaign, emphasizing his belief in promoting fresh energy and integrity in politics. However, he noted that, as time passed, he felt his professional values didn’t align with those of the campaign. He expressed hope that both the campaign and voters would move forward positively in selecting the best candidate for the Senate in 2026.

Previously, Holmes held prominent roles in other campaigns, including work as deputy campaign manager and finance director for Democratic Congressman Josh Riley of New York, and as national finance director for Chris Swanson, a candidate in the 2026 Michigan gubernatorial race.

A spokesperson for Platner’s campaign acknowledged Holmes’s contributions, stating his efforts helped connect the campaign to major donors. However, the spokesperson pointed out that nearly 90 percent of their fundraising came from small donations, suggesting a broader base of support. Despite these challenges, Platner’s campaign raised over $3.2 million in six weeks, a feat attributed in part to his high profile, including an endorsement from Senator Bernie Sanders this past August.

Yet, the momentum may have shifted when controversial past remarks made by Platner resurfaced, causing significant concern. These included comments that appeared to downplay sexual assault in the military and his self-identification as a communist on an old Reddit post. Platner has since apologized, attributing his past views to a time of intense conflict in his life.

Compounding the controversy was a leaked video that showcased a tattoo Platner had, which some connected to Nazi symbolism. He has since denied such implications, stating that he subsequently covered the tattoo with a new design.

Despite the unfolding controversies, Senator Sanders remains supportive of Platner, calling him a “great candidate” who he believes will succeed in becoming Maine’s next senator.

Platner is currently competing against Janet Mills, the well-established Democratic Governor of Maine, in the Senate primary. The victor is anticipated to face incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins, who has held her seat since 1997.
