Johnson cautions about Trump's 'nuclear' shutdown request

Prime Minister Johnson cautions against President Trump’s call for Senate to ‘abandon nuclear weapons’ in efforts to end the government shutdown

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) has raised concerns regarding President Trump’s recent appeal for the Senate to utilize the “nuclear option” to resolve the ongoing government shutdown. At a news conference on Friday, Johnson was asked about a post made by Trump on Truth Social. In it, Trump urged the Senate to abolish the filibuster and eliminate the requirement of a 60-vote threshold for passing federal funding proposals, suggesting a simple majority would suffice.

“Generally speaking, I’ve mentioned before that the filibuster is not my decision to make. It’s up to the Senate,” Johnson stated. “However, the filibuster is traditionally viewed as a significant safeguard. It’s, you know, I think our side wouldn’t appreciate it if the roles were reversed.”
