Kevin Durant’s Perspective on Marriage

Over a decade ago, Kevin Durant raised a question to a former WNBA player. Now, the NBA star, playing for the Houston Rockets, envisions no future with marriage.

Durant, who was engaged to Monica Wright back in 2013 but ended the engagement shortly after, recently shared his thoughts on a podcast hosted by Bobby Althoff. During the episode, he declared, “It is hopeless,” expressing his disinterest in the institution of marriage.

When asked if he could see himself spending his life with one person, Durant hesitated, replying, “I don’t know.” He pondered the reality of marriage and commented on the rising divorce rates, adding, “Do you want to be with someone every day… without the option of doing your own thing?”

He mentioned his reluctance to “plan for 40 years” and noted he never dreamt about having a wedding. Attending weddings, he said, gives him mixed feelings—he finds them fascinating but isn’t entirely sold on the idea for himself.

Even though he hasn’t ruled out marriage entirely, he admits he’s “not looking forward to it.” What he really wants is to find someone he can spend time with daily—someone he can have genuine conversations with and consider as a friend, but he’s cautious about being labeled.

Durant articulated that the societal expectations of marriage often create unnecessary pressure. He prefers a scenario without those expectations, as sometimes, he might not feel like talking or seeing someone. He’s focusing on enjoying relationships without the titles and obligations that commonly accompany them.

As Durant enters his 18th season, including a prior season lost due to injury, his views on relationships might very well reflect a broader sentiment in today’s world—where the traditional paths some follow may not resonate with everyone.
