John Metchie III’s Journey and New Opportunity
John Metchie III has faced significant challenges in his football career, experiencing his future’s uncertainty at two pivotal moments.
When he was a freshman at St. James School back in 2014, he encountered a major setback due to an enlarged heart, sidelining him for most of the season.
Then in 2021, during the SEC Championship Game, he tore his ACL. To make matters worse, by the time the Texans started training camp in 2022, he was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia, which meant he missed his entire rookie year.
Mike Still, a high school assistant coach who remains in touch with Metchie, recalls their conversation after that heart issue. There was a sense of disbelief. “What about this?” he asked. Injuries like ankle sprains were what they usually dealt with, so this was out of the ordinary.
Colin Ponder, currently the St. James head coach and a former assistant, noted that the leukemia diagnosis was equally unexpected.
Despite these obstacles, Metchie persevered. He flourished at St. James, continued his development at Peddie School, and eventually became part of a talented receiving corps at the University of Alabama. In 2023, he returned to practice with the Texans, played in his first game that season, and even caught his first touchdown pass the following year.
The journey was riddled with uncertainty, yet each milestone felt significant, marking his comeback. However, his progress recently encountered another hurdle. The Eagles, with a strong receiving lineup featuring players like AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith, made it tough for him to secure consistent playing time.
This week, Metchie’s luck may have changed; he was traded to the Jets for a 2027 sixth-round pick and a seventh-round pick, previously held by cornerback Michael Carter II. This move could provide him with the clearest path yet to the starting lineup.
Considering the Jets’ depth issues, with key players Garrett Wilson and Josh Reynolds dealing with injuries during their bye week, Metchie might finally get the opportunity he’s been waiting for. It seems like for the first time in quite a while, he has a chance to become the player everyone anticipated he could be.
Still remarked on this shift, saying, “Right now in the NFL, he’s waiting for that shot… He’s been in an incredibly stacked receiver room since Alabama. I think this provides him a chance to be more involved, and that’s what we’re all hoping for.”
Last week, signs indicated something was brewing. Metchie had been spotted practicing with the first-team offense, and with Brown expected to miss the next game, there was hope that he would have more opportunities after playing just seven snaps over the past two weeks.
But despite this excitement, he ended up being limited to just nine snaps in the most recent game, without a goal to show for it.
Shortly after the trade news broke, Still communicated with Metchie, feeling a surge of excitement from his former player who is eager to seize this new chance.
“I think he wants to be part of a system that truly values his talents,” Still shared. “He might have felt important elsewhere, but he’s looking to contribute more actively rather than just being a star.”
Reflecting on his college career, Metchie shared the field with several other elite players, including Smith and Jerry Jeudy. In his last college season, he amassed 96 receptions for 1,142 yards and eight touchdowns before his ACL injury. He even had an impressive performance with eight catches for 81 yards in Alabama’s national championship win against Ohio State.
After returning from leukemia treatment in 2023, he showcased his skills with 16 catches for 158 yards, followed by 254 yards in the following season while playing alongside Nico Collins and Tank Dell. His 2023 Texans teammate, Devin Singletary, praised his versatility and understanding of the game.
Now, it will be about finding the right fit. He needs this chance to solidify his role in the Jets’ offense.
As Singletary expressed, despite the emotional weight of Metchie’s story, his resilience shines through. “I wouldn’t wish what he went through on anyone, but to see him come back and perform at a high level is incredible,” he remarked. “He continues to prove that he’s a champion.”
