Rangers’ Line Changes Ahead of Game Against Kraken

SEATTLE — Coach Mike Sullivan expressed satisfaction with the line adjustments he made during the Rangers’ overtime win over the Oilers on Thursday night.

Most lines found success, but the newly formed top trio of Artemi Panarin, JT Miller, and Mika Zibanejad seemed to spark the change. It not only serves as inspiration but could also be a foundation for the rest of the forward lineup.

“I thought we’d give it another shot in practice today and see how it pans out,” Sullivan shared before the upcoming matchup with the Kraken. “The reaction in the third period definitely suggests we should consider keeping them together. We’ve held back on this for a reason—we’re aiming for the right balance that we believe is necessary to win. Sometimes, though, envisioning how a line will perform and actually seeing it unfold are two different things.”

“We put a lot of thought into these decisions, trying to mix complementary skill sets to create combinations that make sense logically. But, as we know, things don’t always work out as planned. You won’t really know until you see it in action.”

With this top line established, the second unit will include Will Quill, Noah Laba, and Alexis Lafreniere. Sullivan felt optimistic about giving Rava the second-line center role due to his impressive recent performances.

The third line is made up of Connor Sheary, Juuso Parsinen, and Taylor Radish, while the fourth line remains the same with Adam Edstrom, Sam Carrick, and Johnny Brodzinski.

“They’ve got talent,” Sullivan noted about the top line. “JT and Micah have great chemistry, and we’ve discussed that a lot. Bred has a solid track record in the league, indicating he’s a capable offensive player. Together, they’re among our most skilled offensive players. The idea was that while they created plenty of scoring chances, they had a bit of trouble finishing.”

“I’ve been discussing this with the coaching staff for several days now, debating whether bringing everyone together could help break them out of their slump, which we hadn’t tried before Thursday. But it’s something we’ve been mulling over for weeks.”

Since the Kraken entered the league in the 2021-22 season, the Rangers have managed to earn points in seven out of their eight encounters.
