Murder Charges Filed in Disappearance of 5-Year-Old Idaho Boy
Idaho prosecutors have initiated murder charges in connection with the 2021 disappearance of a 5-year-old boy from Fruitland, who appears to have been kidnapped and killed in his own neighborhood.
Payette County Prosecutor Michael Duke confirmed on Friday that his office intends to press charges against individuals linked to the case of Michael Vaughn, who went missing during the summer of 2021.
While Duke did not specify the number of suspects or their identities, reports indicate that a man, previously suspected and residing near where the boy vanished, has been named in an arrest warrant. Local outlet KTVB-7 noted that Stacey Wondra, 33, faces charges including first-degree murder, second-degree kidnapping, and tampering with evidence, according to law enforcement sources.
The sheriff’s office refrained from providing additional comments, and the Fruitland Police Chief deferred inquiries to the prosecutor’s office.
Wondra and his wife, Sarah, 38, were arrested back in 2022 on misdemeanor charges related to Michael’s case. While Sarah’s charge of failing to report a death was dismissed, Stacey faced unrelated charges leading to his imprisonment in Arizona.
Recently, Wondra has sought an early release from federal custody, claiming exemplary behavior while incarcerated. He is reportedly set to be extradited back to Idaho.
During the investigation, police had previously named the Wondra family among several suspects. Sarah Wondra had drawn attention through her social media posts, which included photos taken in proximity to flyers about Michael’s disappearance.
Newly released body camera footage shows Stacey Wondra placing blame on his wife during a police raid, as detailed by KIVI-TV.
Prosecutor Duke expressed that investigators had hoped to discover Michael’s remains prior to filing charges. However, they also aimed to minimize any additional anguish for the victim’s family.
Following the announcement, Michael’s mother, Brandi Vaughn, commended the Fruitland Police and Duke’s team for their relentless efforts, recognizing their strength and determination through this challenging ordeal.
Michael went missing from his parents’ home in July 2021, with local authorities having previously searched the area around the Wondra residence extensively.
Authorities had also named two other suspects: Adrian Lucienne and Brandon Shultliff. Duke highlighted the diligence of the Fruitland Police Department in the investigation, emphasizing their commitment to finding justice for Michael.
