NYCFC aims to recreate their winning strategy in Game 2 against Charlotte FC

NYCFC Defender Reflects on Game 1 Success Against Charlotte FC

Tyvon Gray, a defender for New York City FC, seemed a bit hesitant to spill the secrets behind his team’s defensive prowess in their recent match against Charlotte FC.

“But, um, do I really want to go into detail?” he joked during an interview at the club’s training facility in Rockland County.

NYCFC currently leads the best-of-three series 1-0, and their defensive strategy really shone through in Game 1, where they effectively stifled Charlotte’s offense.

In the first half of their 1-0 victory, NYCFC allowed Charlotte only three shots, with just one being on target, and there were no significant scoring opportunities for the opposing team during those first 45 minutes.

Charlotte’s expected goals (xG) for that half were a mere 0.12. Though Charlotte put up more of a fight in the second half, NYCFC’s shutout marked their second consecutive match without conceding a goal.

“Our game plan worked,” Gray noted. “I think it was a joint effort with me and Kevin. We definitely caused some issues for them. We’ll be thinking of a few more tricks to add before the next game, but overall, I believe our approach paid off.”

One factor that benefited NYCFC was the absence of Charlotte’s Wilfried Zaha, who was out serving a suspension during the match. Zaha, a key player who had scored in three straight regular-season games and boasts ten goals this season, will certainly aim to make a mark upon his return.

NYCFC head coach Pascal Jansen acknowledged Zaha’s importance but insisted that the team’s preparations wouldn’t be dramatically altered by his presence. “We recognize his strengths and weaknesses,” he stated. “We faced him during the regular season, and we know he’s a crucial player for Charlotte. Having him back will definitely affect our strategy for Game 2.”

This upcoming Saturday will be a significant occasion as it marks NYCFC’s first playoff game at Yankee Stadium since they clinched their first MLS title back in 2021. It’s a golden opportunity for the team to secure their place in the second round against the victor of the Philadelphia-Chicago match.

Considering the high stakes and the anticipated enthusiasm from the fans, it’s easy to understand the added pressure facing NYCFC, who have won 11 times at home this season. Midfielder Aiden O’Neill expressed that he enjoys the pressure, saying it adds to the thrill of the game, while Gray seems open to embracing it as well.

“There’s always some pressure. I actually think that’s a good thing,” he remarked. “It shows how committed you are. We really want to go far in this competition. I believe if there’s no pressure, you may not be doing it right.”

The first match between the two teams was highly physical, marked by a scuffle in the 90th minute after O’Toole pushed Charlotte’s Ashley Westwood from behind.

Jansen emphasized that a key part of avoiding carryover from Game 1 to Game 2 is maintaining composure in intense situations, referring to this approach as “keeping a blue head.”
