I’ve been hearing that kids in high heels are making their way into the suburbs.
It seems that there’s more to life than just a house in Connecticut. The buzz is that democratic socialist Zoran Mandani looks poised to take the New York mayoral election. Families are reportedly showing increased interest in schools in these affluent areas, likely seeking an escape from the city.
According to sources, some top-tier schools in wealthy neighborhoods are experiencing a rise in interest from families looking to move out of town.
An official from Greenwich, Connecticut, mentioned to Page Six that an open house at Greenwich Country Day School attracted so many attendees from the city that they had to use an additional auditorium to livestream the event.
This increased interest has been dubbed the “Mamdani flight.” Officials indicated there was no direct communication from the school regarding this surge.
Tuition for these prestigious private schools varies significantly, ranging from about $46,430 for daycare to over $60,000 for high school.
The Greenwich Country Day School has some notable alumni—think President George H.W. Bush, former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki, and even NBA stars. One alumni, Donovan Mitchell, notably donated $12 million back to the school in 2020.
Mamdani has suggested that, if elected, he might eliminate the city’s ‘Talented People’ program for kindergarteners. This could create more ripple effects within the school system.
As for the housing market, real estate agents in Connecticut and Westchester are reporting a frenzy reminiscent of the pandemic. Properties are flying off the market within days, often sold through competitive all-cash deals that exceed original price expectations.
In upscale Greenwich, the inventory of homes for sale has plummeted to around 117, down from more than 800 just a few years ago. This shortage is intensifying competition even among high-value properties, and it’s possible that this trend will extend to local private schools.
“Many of the buyers are citing the upcoming mayoral election as a key reason for their decision to move,” one broker noted.
