Al Sharpton Critiques Islamophobia in Mayoral Race

Pastor Al Sharpton recently condemned the rising “ugly Islamophobia” in New York’s mayoral election, particularly targeting the portrayal of Muslims amidst attacks on Democratic candidate Zoran Mamdani. Speaking at an event hosted for Mamdani in Harlem, Sharpton, also a progressive activist and MSNBC host, criticized those who generalize all Muslims as terrorists to undermine their political opponents.

He voiced his outrage about the exploitation of Islamophobia during the campaign, especially given the rising tensions following the 9/11 attacks. Sharpton expressed, “What happened to us on 9/11 was an insult to the intelligence of all New Yorkers,” highlighting how misleading narratives about Muslims persist. He made these statements at the House of Justice, the headquarters of the National Action Network.

During the event, Mamdani also took a stand, accusing former President Donald Trump of diminishing welfare programs and drawing parallels with historical Reconstruction-era systems aimed at supporting freed slaves.

Sharpton wasn’t alone in his sentiments; he was joined by Rev. Miles Travis Boyd, who lost his mother in the 9/11 attacks, alongside other faith leaders. “If your record doesn’t get you the votes, don’t play us against each other,” Sharpton remarked, emphasizing that mere associations with individuals don’t imply shared culpability. This might have referred to Mamdani’s recent meeting with Brooklyn imam Siraj Wahhaj, who had previous allegations tied to terrorist activities.

Sharpton expressed his disapproval of the October 7, 2023, terrorist attacks in Israel and the subsequent conflict in Gaza. His comments were clear: while he opposes Islamophobia, politicizing it in a major city is unacceptable. “We’re Christians. I’m a born-again Baptist, but I embrace the Muslim community,” he stated, advocating for unity across communities.

In a show of support, Sharpton highlighted Mamdani as a candidate worth backing, saying, “In the interest of fairness, for the sake of affordability, and for the sake of those who have been sacrificed, I present the candidate who has emerged, Zoran Mamdani.” This prompted cheers and applause from the crowd.

Mamdani then built on Sharpton’s words, referencing America’s Reconstruction period. He criticized Trump for allegedly undermining modern welfare programs, which he claimed echo the efforts of the historic Freedmen’s Bureau aimed at aiding those in need.

He stated, “If the Freedmen’s Bureau existed today, Donald Trump would steal its coffers and smear it as socialist overreach,” claiming that Trump’s policies consistently favor the rich while neglecting the impoverished.

Mamdani emphasized his campaign’s commitment to moral and economic revitalization across NYC, stating, “My friends, over the past 12 months we have been building a movement around creating a society where we all want to see the poor receive aid, those working late into the night freed for the day, injustice banished from our cities, and trust in City Hall restored.”
