Clemson’s Struggles Continue
Things aren’t improving for the Clemson Tigers. Head coach Dabo Swinney spoke after a nail-biting 46-45 defeat against Duke University, marking yet another challenge for a team grappling with defense issues.
In a tense moment, with under 20 seconds remaining in the first half, Duke’s quarterback Darian Mensah allowed a 42-yard touchdown pass to Clemson’s Keshawn Brown, tying the game at 28.
Swinney’s frustration was evident. “They gave you 28 points!” he exclaimed during the chaotic game.
Currently, the Tigers hold a record of 3-5 and are 2-4 in the ACC, making them one of the season’s most disappointing teams in college football.
The season has seen Clemson endure significant losses against conference rivals such as SMU and Syracuse. Their victories have mostly come against weaker teams like North Carolina, Troy, and Boston College.
At the season’s start, Clemson had national championship aspirations and was ranked third in the preseason Associated Press poll. That makes the current situation all the more surprising. Swinney, a veteran in college football, seems to be under considerable pressure as the Tigers navigate their worst season in years.
Since taking over in 2010, Swinney hasn’t faced a losing season. He’s led the team to national titles twice, so the expectations have always been high.
Earlier this year, Swinney voiced his displeasure with the criticisms he faced regarding the team’s performance. “What’s so bad about our program?” he questioned in mid-September, highlighting the different standards applied to teams in college football. He noted how other programs with fewer wins aren’t held to the same scrutiny. “We could end up with a mediocre 6-6 record, but I don’t think that will happen,” he expressed, resolute in his belief.
He added, “If they want me to leave, if they’re tired of winning, they can let me go because all we’ve been doing is winning.”
