Concerns Grow for Miami Dolphins’ Tua Tagovailoa
NFL officials have raised alarms about the mounting pressure on Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa as the team transitions into a new phase.
Speaking on “NFL GameDay Morning,” Ian Rapoport of NFL Network suggested that Tagovailoa might not remain the starter through the end of the 2025 season. “The Dolphins could replace him at quarterback,” he noted. “He’s essentially playing to keep his job at this point. With 11 interceptions leading the league, it wouldn’t be surprising if they consider shifting him to backup as the season progresses.”
As it stands, Tagovailoa’s backups are Zach Wilson and rookie Quinn Ewers. The Dolphins suffered a significant 28-6 defeat against the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday night, with Lamar Jackson throwing four touchdown passes in his return.
In that game, Tagovailoa completed 25 of 40 attempts for 261 yards, along with one interception and getting sacked twice.
Following this loss, the Dolphins also made a major change by parting ways with general manager Chris Grier. This decision could potentially lead to more changes ahead of the NFL trade deadline. Rapoport mentioned that it would require a substantial offer to trade for the highly sought-after wide receiver Jaylen Waddle.
Currently in his sixth season in Miami, Tagovailoa has amassed 1,779 passing yards and thrown 15 touchdowns this year. However, he’s been without star wide receiver Tyreek Hill, and Darren Waller has also been sidelined due to injury.
Tagovailoa signed a four-year contract extension before the 2024 season, reportedly valued at $212.4 million. Interestingly, he has an option to leave the team after the 2026 season.
