Panthers Secure Upset Victory Over Packers
In a thrilling finish, Carolina Panthers kicker Ryan Fitzgerald overcame the harsh winds of Green Bay to land a game-winning 49-yard field goal on Sunday, leading to an unexpected 16-13 victory.
Quarterback Bryce Young orchestrated a crucial final drive for the Panthers, completing two key passes, while running back Rico Doodle sprinted for 19 yards, all of which set the stage for Fitzgerald’s successful kick.
The Packers, boasting the NFC’s top record at 5-1-1 before the game, were in a position to secure a playoff spot if the season had ended that week. For Carolina, however, it was a chance to snag a significant win, and head coach Dave Canales relied on sharp defensive plays to disrupt Green Bay’s rhythm.
In the third quarter, with the Panthers up 7-6, Packers quarterback Jordan Love threw an interception that led to a safety by Trevon Mehrig. The Panthers capitalized on this, embarking on an eight-play, 38-yard drive capped off by a touchdown run from Doodle, which gave them a 13-6 lead. Notably, Fitzgerald missed the subsequent extra point.
Love and the Packers needed a touchdown to tie. He managed to lead them down the field on a 12-play, 71-yard drive, culminating in a touchdown run by Josh Jacobs. Still, Green Bay’s defense faltered when it mattered most, unable to halt the Panthers’ drive to victory.
Young finished the game completing 11 of 20 passes for 102 yards with one interception, while Doodle impressed with 130 rushing yards on 25 carries and two touchdowns.
In contrast, Love’s stats showed him at 26 of 37 for 273 yards, accompanied by an interception.
With this win, Carolina improved to 5-4 for the season, while Green Bay dropped to 5-2-1.
