Jay Jones surprises with a lead in the Virginia AG race despite alarming texts -- Abigail Spanberger remains the top choice for governor: poll

Virginia Attorney General Race Tightens Amid Controversy

A recently released poll has stirred quite a bit of conversation as the election approaches. Jay Jones, the Democratic candidate for attorney general in Virginia, is narrowly leading Republican incumbent Jason Miyares, despite some troubling allegations. Jones, who’s been in the spotlight after being arrested for reportedly sending text messages in which he fantasized about killing a political rival, has a 2-point advantage—49% to 47%—according to a survey conducted by Insider Advantage, a company based in Georgia.

On a related note, another poll from Emerson College also indicates that Jones has a slight edge among likely voters and those who have already cast their ballots. This comes after a month of turmoil sparked by the leaked text messages in which he made shocking comments about then-Republican state House Speaker Todd Gilbert.

In one message, Jones mentioned a violent scenario involving Gilbert alongside notorious figures like Hitler and Pol Pot, stating, “Two bullets for three people.” His messages to Republican Representative Carrie Coyner were notably unsettling: “Gilbert gets two bullets in the head.”

There were further disturbing comments about Gilbert’s children, whom he derogatorily referred to in connection with fantasies about altering their father’s political views. Although Jones later issued an apology, many top Democrats, including Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner, have publicly supported his continuation in the race, despite Republican calls for him to step down.

During a rally, Jones criticized Miyares, linking him to Trump by saying, “Trump supported Jason. What that means is he will never let Donald Trump down.” Meanwhile, another Insider Advantage poll showed Abigail Spanberger with a notable lead over Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earl Sears, pulling ahead by 10 points. A segment of the voters indicated support for independent Donna Charles, while the rest were either undecided or chose not to participate.

Spanberger’s lead is quite considerable, showing a margin of 9.6 percentage points in the latest polling, even reaching an 11-point lead in one Emerson College survey. Pollster Matt Towery noted a significant drop in support for Sears, suggesting that part of this is due to the recovery of Jones after the initial outcry over his text messages.

The Insider Advantage poll was conducted from November 2 to 3, surveying 800 likely voters in Virginia, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.46 percentage points. The Emerson College poll involved 880 prospective voters, having a margin of error of plus or minus 3.2 percentage points.
