Justice Department Official Faces Trial for Assaulting CBP Agent with a Sandwich
A judge has indicated that the trial of former Justice Department official Sean Charles Dunn, linked to a bizarre incident involving a sandwich thrown at a U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent, is expected to wrap up in about two days. U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols mentioned this prospect, describing the case as “the simplest case in the world.” Dunn’s trial is set to begin with opening statements from both sides on Tuesday, as reported by the Associated Press. The CBP agent involved in the incident, which occurred in August, is anticipated to be the first witness for the prosecution.
Initially charged with a felony, Dunn was not indicted by a grand jury and now faces several misdemeanor charges instead.
Video evidence purportedly shows Dunn fleeing the scene after throwing the sandwich. A criminal complaint from August details that Dunn confronted CBP Agent Gregory Laremore, yelling at him and throwing the sandwich. The document describes Dunn as being inches away from Laremore, saying things like, “I don’t want you in my town!” He allegedly punched the officer in the chest along with the sandwich throw.
During processing at the police station, Dunn reportedly admitted to throwing the sandwich. After attempting to evade authorities, he was arrested but later released—only to be re-arrested during an armed federal raid at his home.
Dunn’s legal team has argued that the case is politically motivated, claiming that he had offered to surrender prior to the police raid. They also highlighted that the White House shared a polished video related to the incident, which they branded as “propaganda.”
Previously, Dunn served as an international affairs specialist within the Department of Justice. Following his arrest, Attorney General Pam Bondi described his actions as reflecting what she termed “the deep state.” Before the trial, Dunn’s defense asked the judge to dismiss the case, arguing it was a case of selective prosecution due to Dunn’s past political expressions. They raised questions regarding the inconsistency of prosecuting him, especially given prior clemency granted by the Trump administration in connection with events surrounding January 6, 2021.
Dunn’s attorney, Julia Gatto, noted that this situation gives rise to the notion of selective prosecution, suggesting that differing political views played a role in his case. In contrast, prosecutors emphasized that political sentiments do not shield a defendant from accountability when it involves assaulting a federal officer.
Ultimately, Dunn is facing charges related to assault, resisting, and obstructing a federal officer. The unfolding case has caught public attention, reflecting the sometimes peculiar nature of legal circumstances.
