Election Day 2025: Key Races and Candidates
As Election Day 2025 approaches, many eyes will be on several important races that could signal the political landscape for the upcoming midterm elections. Two states are set to choose new governors, while major cities across the country, especially the most populous ones, are gearing up to vote in mayoral contests that carry significant implications for party momentum.
California, being the most populous state, will also engage in a contentious political struggle regarding congressional redistricting, pitting Republicans against Democrats. It’s shaping up to be a memorable election, especially as various candidates, some aiming for historic achievements, take center stage.
Zoran Mamdani
One of the standout figures is Zoran Mamdani, a 34-year-old Democratic Socialist from Queens, New York. He stunned many back in June by besting former Governor Andrew Cuomo and a crowded field to secure the Democratic nomination for mayor. If successful, Mamdani would not only become New York’s first Muslim mayor but also its first millennial mayor.
Winsome Earl Sears
Over in Virginia, Republican gubernatorial candidate Winsome Earl Sears is another name to watch. Having made history four years ago as the first female lieutenant governor of the state, she has an opportunity to achieve even more. If she wins, she will be the first black woman to serve as governor in the U.S. as well as the first woman to hold that position in Virginia.
Abigail Spanberger
On the Democratic side, Abigail Spanberger, a former CIA officer and congresswoman, is vying for the governor’s mansion in Virginia. If victorious, she will become the state’s first female governor, further adding to the historical context of this election.
Mikie Sherrill
In New Jersey, Democratic Rep. Mikie Sherrill is aiming to make her own mark in the gubernatorial race. Though a woman has previously held the governor’s office—Republican Christine Todd Whitman—if Sherrill prevails, she will be the first Democrat to do so in the state’s history.
Virginia Lieutenant Governor Election
The lieutenant governor race in Virginia is also noteworthy. Democratic candidate Sen. Ghazala Hashmi could make history as the first Muslim and Indian American in that role. Meanwhile, Republican John Reed stands to be the first openly gay lieutenant governor of Virginia if elected.
Minneapolis Mayoral Election
In Minneapolis, Democratic socialist Omar Fateh is running for mayor. He has already etched his name into history as the first Somali-American and Muslim in the Minnesota State Senate. Should he win, he will become Minneapolis’s first Muslim and Somali-American mayor.
