Ukraine Reports Long-Distance Attacks on Locations 800 Miles Within Russia

A long-range Ukrainian drone targeted an industrial facility located roughly 1,300 kilometers (about 800 miles) inside Russia, according to local officials on Tuesday. This event coincided with intense combat as Ukrainian forces worked to repel a Russian attack on Pokrovsk, the central city in eastern Donetsk.

Regional governor Rady Khabilov reported that two drones targeted an industrial location in Sterlitamak, a city within Russia’s Bashkortostan region. While he did not specify which facility was impacted, he mentioned that both drones were intercepted. Thankfully, there were no reported casualties, and operations at the facility continued as usual.

City officials noted an explosion at the Sterlitamak petrochemical plant, which led to partial collapse of the water treatment facility, though the cause remains unclear. The plant, known for producing rubber and aviation fuel, had not reported previous attacks.

Ukraine’s audacious drone strikes deep into Russian territory have placed the Kremlin in a challenging position, as authorities have remained tight-lipped about the damage, upsetting the public. Nearly four years after the commencement of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Ukraine has increasingly targeted various manufacturing sites, oil refineries, and military logistics hubs to disrupt Russia’s operations.

Reports from Russian media indicated that explosions were also detected in an industrial district of the Nizhny Novgorod region, situated around 800 kilometers from Ukraine, an area known for its oil refineries and petrochemical facilities. However, officials have yet to verify these claims.

Bashkortostan and Nizhny Novgorod were among the regions where the Russian Ministry of Defense claimed to have intercepted Ukrainian drones, reportedly shooting down 85 overnight.

In the southeastern Ukrainian region of Dnipropetrovsk, local officials reported a barrage of Russian attacks involving drones, missiles, and artillery, resulting in one death and injuries to 11 others, including two children.

According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the previous night saw Russia launch seven different missiles as well as 130 drones designed for attack and deception.

On another front, Romania’s Ministry of Defense disclosed that Russian forces attacked infrastructure near Ukraine’s Danube port twice overnight, close to the border with NATO countries.

The ministry stated that two groups of fighter jets were dispatched from separate air bases for protective missions after “multiple explosions were noted off Ukraine’s coast.”

In terms of battlefield dynamics, the struggle for control over Pokrovsk, a significant Ukrainian stronghold in the Donetsk region, has intensified. Russian forces have sought to capture this location for over a year.

Recently, Russia has ramped up its efforts in the area, claiming progress with its troops moving closer to Pokrovsk.

The Institute for War Studies, a think tank based in Washington, remarked late Monday that “Russian forces are making strides toward Pokrovsk and seem increasingly at ease operating within the city.”
