Willie Geist Questions Zohran Mamdani About Funding for Socialist Initiatives

Mamdani’s Plans Raise Funding Questions

On Tuesday’s episode of “Morning Joe,” Willie Geist questioned Zoran Mamdani, a Democratic candidate for mayor of New York, about how he intends to finance his ambitious proposals. If he wins, Mamdani plans to implement a $30 minimum wage, open government-run grocery stores, and introduce city-operated buses, alongside increasing taxes. Naturally, Geist probed him on who would foot the bill for these initiatives.

“So it seems like you’re proposing free grocery stores, free buses, a $30 minimum wage—basically, everything,” Geist pointed out, expressing disbelief. He continued, “I mean, groceries are pretty affordable already. But it’s good to see that people want answers. So, how do you plan to pay for it? Who’s going to cover these costs?”

In response, Mamdani shifted gears, taking aim at his opponent, independent mayoral candidate Andrew Cuomo, for accepting assistance from prominent figures like Donald Trump and Elon Musk. Yet, Geist quickly redirected the focus back to Mamdani’s commitments.

“What are your thoughts on affordability?” Geist asked. Mamdani replied, “Let’s talk about the $30 minimum wage for the people who own dry cleaners and other small businesses. You know, those businesses you’ve grown up with—like nail salons and hair salons—often struggle in your own neighborhoods. They might not be able to afford to pay staff $30 an hour, and, well, that could lead to layoffs or even business closures. How do you reconcile that?”

“Well, I expect this increase will be phased in over a longer timeframe for small businesses,” Mamdani replied. “That’s usually how minimum wage hikes are handled. Concerns about affordability are not new; we’ve heard them before during previous increases. The fact is, to live in this city, you really need to be making around $30 an hour. If businesses don’t adapt, they’re at risk of losing their staff—just like that man I met outside Elmhurst Hospital, earning $11.99. He travels two hours from Pennsylvania every day because he simply can’t afford New York City rent,” he continued.

In 2021, Mamdani indicated in a resurfaced video that the ultimate aim of socialism is “to take control of the means of production.” He enjoys the support of notable figures such as Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders.

Before Tuesday’s election, Mamdani was ahead by 14 points in the race, according to recent polling data.
